Abstract

This study examines the intertextuality and adaptation in Ahmad Yahya Hamid Al-Din's poetry, focusing on his adaptation of Abu Feras Al-Hamadani's famous poem (I see you, defiant against tears). consists of an introduction, first part involves a biography of both poets, an exploration of the cultural and artistic context of their works, the second part involves definitions of intertextuality and adaptation section and it delves into first the types of intertextuality present in Hamid al-Din's adaptation, second the techniques used in this adaptation, and the unique characteristics of the new text. Key findings of the study include:



  • Shared cultural context: The shared cultural background between the two poets influenced Hamid al-Din to adapt Abu Feras's poem. This adaptation involved a dialogue between the new text and the original, as well as other absent texts, resulting in a unique and integrated new work.

  • Types of intertextuality: The study identifies various types of intertextuality in the new text, including religious, literary, and historical intertextuality, both direct and indirect.

  • Techniques of adaptation: The study explores the techniques used in the adaptation process, such as quotation, absorption, and transformation.

  • Characteristics of the new text: The new text contributes to the continuity of the original text while introducing innovative elements. It transforms the original love poem into a more heroic one, addressing the theme of imprisonment and elevating the status of the captive.
